LONE DANCER: IROQUOIS WOOD CARVER OF KACHINA DOLLS
Wes Hill, also known as Lone Dancer, was inspired in the art of carving at a young age. He watched his grandfather carve objects from wood and stone. He tried carving when he was a teenager, fell away from it and took it up again seriously. For the past 18 years, he has focused mainly on the Indian Kachina dolls as his subjects.
When Wes carves his Kachina Dolls and Pow Wow Dancers, he takes pains to recreate both their body movements and their dress. Mr. Hill favors basswood for the main body of the Kachina doll, with added items kept as real as possible with leather, hair, and feathers.
